This morning (20 April) the 6 finalists in Cumbria's R Factor were announced on the county's local commercial radio stations - CFM, The Bay and Lakeland Radio.
Since last October over 135 primary schools have taken part in an initiative in association with Cumbria's Waste Partnership, Resource Cumbria to promote the 3Rs of waste awareness - reduce, reuse and recycle through devising a song in professionally hosted workshops to be aired on local radio.
In North Cumbria the 3 finalists are Rosley Primary School in Wigton, Kirkbride Primary School in Kirkbride, and Holm Cultram Abbey Primary School in Abbeytown. The south of the county has finalists from Cambridge Primary School , Barrow In Furness, Crosscrake Primary School in Stainton and Castle Park Primary School in Kendal.
This morning voting began in one of the most exciting competitions ever to have been held across all of the county's commercial radio stations, and in just 2 weeks time after months of hard work, 2 schools (one from North and one from South Cumbria) will win The R Factor 2009.
Listeners can vote for their favourite song via either their local radio station website, recycleforcumbria.org or via text if you're listening on the go.
The 2 professionally recorded winning R Factor songs will then be played on air as a promotional campaign from mid May, and will culminate in a concert featuring all 6 finalists at Rheged in June, where there will be presentations made to all 6 finalists to celebrate their success in assisting the promotion of the 3Rs of waste reduction - REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE.
Bill Johnston, Managing Director The Bay and Lakeland Radio, "The talent has been of a very high standard and I have no doubt that this campaign will be a large contributing factor in ensuring the people of Cumbria practice the 3R's of Waste Awareness."
